The Curriculum

At Bitham Brook, the curriculum content is directed by the National Curriculum document which can be downloaded below:

We use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme supported by Floppy’s Phonics reading books to teach reading at Bitham Brook.  In Key Stage One we use Rigby Star and other schemes tailored to help individual learners who benefit from additional or different approaches.

At Bitham Brook we provide a curriculum which is broad and balanced, whilst seeking to make it engaging and exciting for children and adults. Children are given opportunities to access this curriculum in ways which fit in with our teaching and learning principles:

Teaching for Learning Summary

We believe that this helps to prepare children to be lifelong learners so that they can thrive and excel at secondary school and whatever they choose to do.

As a school we seek to promote and encourage key learning values. We believe these values are essential building blocks to enable children to achieve their very best. Each value is explored for a term in our assembly times, in the classroom and through interactive displays around the school. Our values this year are centred around the Spirit of the Games sporting values.  The Spirit of the Games Values were developed by young people to identify what the experience of school sport should be built around, and focus on personal excellence through competition.  These values have been successfully applied by schools to developing a range of behaviours, qualities and inter-personal skills with their students based on sporting experiences, scenarios and attitudes.of:-
◾ Teamwork
◾ Respect
◾ Self-belief
◾ Passion
◾ Determination
◾ Honesty

Each term we will focus on one of these values.  At the heart of these values is is our Vision Statement for all children so that they are able to succeed as far as head, hands and heart is concerned.

Head, Hands, Heart

Head - every child a good learner

Hands - every  child knows how to be part of a team

Heart - every child knows they are special

We arrange the learning in whole-school themes each term, as we believe this makes the learning more manageable and more interesting. This importantly helps children to make links across different curricular areas, which helps to underpin their learning. Making connections between different areas of learning is very important for children as learners. Children will be asked at the start of a whole-school theme what it is they want to learn within this theme and are encouraged to ask some really hard questions that they want to answer during their learning in each whole-school theme.

Our themes for this year are:-
◾Space (Autumn)
◾Around the World (Spring)
◾Field work in the local area/Living things and their habitats (Summer)

Most areas of the curriculum are linked to the main theme wherever possible including literacy, science, art and design, history, geography and music.  We also make links where possible for some other curricular areas including Mathematics, French, PSHE, PE and Games, but very often these will be taught separately.

In Religious Education we follow the Wiltshire agreed scheme: Discovery RE Intro and Overview

During each theme, we always look for an opportunity for an off-site visit and often invite a visitor to the school to enhance children’s learning. This helps to provide first-hand learning experiences which we believe are crucial for children.

Our Teaching and Learning Policy is available to view or download on the Policies page of our website together with many of the school’s other key policies.
