How we have used Pupil Premium funding and the impact it has had:

The number of children eligible for Pupil Premium funding in each year group at Bitham Brook varies and they range from having an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP - formerly Statement of Special Educational Needs) to being on the Gifted and Talented Register.  A personalised approach is therefore necessary  to meet their needs and thereby close the gap in performance for this group.

A wide range of support and interventions have been put in place since 2013/2014 and many are continuing in 2016/2017. These include:
◾Paying for eligible children in Years 5 and 6 to attend the residential visits to Braeside and Osmington Bay;
◾Providing funding for in-school individual musical instruent tuition;
◾Providing additional lunchtime staff to support children with behavioural difficulties;
◾Providing in-school counselling through the ‘Time to Talk’ counselling service;
◾Providing a learning mentor for identified children;
◾Providing a laptop computer for children who are able to access ICT at home;
◾Buying in the Forest Schools programme for identified children (until July 2015) and then training a member of support staff to continue the Forest Schools work in school;
◾Enabling identified children to attend ‘Gifted and Talented’ enrichment sessions out of school;
◾Mathematics extension groups in school;
◾Establishing boys’ writing and boys’ reading groups to support boys who are struggling;
◾A full range of intervention programmes for identified children including Catch Up, Letters and  Sounds, Sustained Writing, Speed Up, Numbers Count, ELS, 1:1 Reading, Punctuation Group, Nessy, Comprehension Group.  These are provided by a dedicated TA above and beyond the support that a class TA provides;
◾Additional extra-curricular clubs for children which have included at various times 2 Energy Clubs, Maths Clubs, Tennis Club, Reading Club, Cookery Club and a signing club (Makaton);
◾Additional visits to secondary schools to smooth transition;
◾A temporary breakfast club for an identified group of children;
◾‘Garden of Dreams’ to support children’s emotional wellbeing;
◾Providing additional TA hours and training;
◾Providing small group work with an experienced teacher focussed on overcoming gaps in learning;
◾One to one support for identified children;
◾Providing revision books for children.

What is the Pupil Premium Grant?

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) was introduced in April 2011.  It is allocated to children from low-income families who are eligible for free school meals, to children of service personnel (H M Forces) and to children who have been looked after (fostered) continuously for more than six months.  In 2012-2013 eligibility for the PPG was extended to pupils who had been eligible for free school meals at any point during the preceding six years (Ever 6 FSM).

The PPG per pupil for 2016 to 2017 is as follows:

How you can help:

All children in Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2 are now entitled to free school meals under the Government’s Universal Free School Meals initiative. This makes it more difficult for us to identify children who might be eligible for PPG funding.  If your child would have been entitled to free school meals under the old system (because you are receiving qualifying benefits - see below) and you apply for free school meals, the government will give the school a Pupil Premium of £1,320. - Income-based Job Seekers Allowance (NOT contribution based JSA)
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (NOT contribution based ESA)
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 - National Asylum
Seekers Support (NASS)
- The guarantee element of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit (you must NOT be entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual       income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) that does not exceed £16,190 (April 2012)

- Working Tax Credit ‘run-on’ - the payment you receive for a further four weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit

If you currently receive Working Tax Credit (other than the ‘run-on’) you are not eligible to claim.

At Bitham Brook we are committed to meeting the needs of PPG children within the school environment.  We are committed to narrowing the gap between vulnerable children and their peers and the PPG is a vital part of that process.

Our rationale:
◾We ensure that excellent learning opportunities are created for all children and particularly for children who belong to vulnerable groups;
◾We recognise that some groups of children are more vulnerable to underachievement and as a school we will seek to enable all children to thrive and become successful learners, responsible citizens and resilient individuals;
◾We believe that the best way of achieving these is through ‘quality-first’ teaching;
◾In making provision for socially disadvantaged pupils, we recognise that not all pupils who receive free school meals will be socially disadvantaged;
◾We also recognise that not all pupils who are socially disadvantaged are registered for, or qualify for,  free school meals.  We reserve the right to allocate the Pupil Premium funding to support any child or groups of children the school has identified as being socially disadvantaged;
◾Limited funding and resources means that not all children on the ‘Ever6’ register will be in receipt of specific interventions or additional support at any one time.  All activities carried out using Pupil Premium funding will be aimed at accelerating children’s progress and improving their well-being;
◾The progress of all children is regularly reviewed and monitored and particularly children who might be vulnerable to underachievement, so that appropriate support and intervention can be introduced at an early stage to enable all children to succeed.

The Ofsted document ‘Spending the Pupil Premium successfully to maximize achievement - the overview’ identifies the top ten ‘Gap Busters’. Many of these have been put in place at Bitham Brook including those listed below:

◾Data tracking that identifies the gaps - The school conducts pupil progress meetings three times each year when the headteacher meets with every teacher to discuss the progress of every child in reading, writing and mathematics. Progress of children in groups vulnerable to underachievement is particularly sctrutinized. For all children making less than expected progress, the potential reasons for this under-achievement is explored and appropriate interventions identified. These interventions are reviewed at the next pupil progress meeting. For children with the pupil premium, there is discussion with the teacher on how the pupil premium funding can accelerate progress even if this is not identified as a concern;
◾High profile of pupils eligible for free school meals - all staff are made aware of children who are vulnerable to under-achievement and encouraged to identify key interventions including resources, which will make a difference for these children;
◾Effective teaching and learning - one of our key developmental areas in teaching and learning is in encouraging children’s independence, their ability to think for themselves and take greater responsibility for their own learning. As teachers we have been exploring how we can encourage and develop this in our CPD sessions;
◾Literacy support - there is a huge emphasis in school in developing children’s reading and writing with a major push on improving phonics and creating fantastic writing opportunities for children to inspire and motivate them. The school is seeking to further develop children’s love of books and for reading a wide range of material. The staff have all benefited from significant CPD to enhance this;
◾Targeted support - the school provides a very wide range of targeted support for individuals and small groups from specific literacy and numeracy programmes to interventions aimed at building children’s emotional intelligence. There has been significant investment made into training teachers and TAs in being able to lead these programmes effectively;
◾Full range of educational experiences - support is provided at Bitham Brook to enable children to access a very broad range of learning experiences including funding for school trips, residential, music lessons, enrichment activities, after-school clubs and school holiday provision;
◾Good attendance - there is a drive in school to improve school attendance and reduce lateness through targeting families with poor attendance and punctuality.
